What Difference Does It Make? , A Film About Making Music,”gives viewers an insider’s view on why so many people are drawn to the music biz despite the challenges. It includes introspective commentary from more than 70 artists including, Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, Skream, Richie Hawtin and James Murphy, who discuss the ups and downs of the gig while providing some insights on their creative process.

The film, which was created in celebration of the Red Bull Music Academy‘s 15th anniversary, was shot at the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy in New York by award-winning director Ralf Schmerberg. It was produced by his Berlin-based artist collective Mindpirates

Adrienne Kennedy’s “She Talks to Beethoven” – @ JACK through January 25

In Adrienne Kennedy’s She Talks to Beethoven an African-American woman living in 1961 post-independence Ghana finds comfort in the spirit of famed German composer Ludwig van Beethoven after the disappearance of her husband.

Directed by Charlotte Brathwaite in collaboration with installation artist Abigail DeVille, this 30-minute audio/visual theater performance is non-seated  and incorporates “found objects, drawing, silhouette and projection.”

She Talks to Beethoven runs through January 25 at JACK in Brooklyn, New York.

“The Vault” – Worldwide

Ironlak Films gives us a behind-the-scenes look at graffiti writers at work in abandoned warehouses and on streets around the world, from Denmark to New York City.  Shot by Luke Shirlaw, “The Vault”  features street artists like Bates, Teiser, Does, Nash, Pose, and Vans the Omega.

Jon Naar @ the New Jersey State Museum through May 5

Check out Jon Naar‘s latest interview with State of the Arts about his exhibition at the New Jersey State Museum, which is currently on view through May 5, 2013. Like fellow photojournalists Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper, Naar, 92, is credited for helping to document New York’s street art movement of the ’70s. His 1973 book, The Faith of Graffiti, features some of those images.

Submergence

Can you imagine being lost in this lighting contraption? I’d bet you’d be too mesmerized to even mind.

Submergence is a Squidsoup project by Anthony Rowe, Gaz Bushell, Chris Bennewith, Liam Birtles and Ollie Bown that explores reality and the virtual world we probably thought we could only visualized on our computer screens. It was created through 8, 064 individual points of LED light that dangles in a walk-through space.

Submergence is on display at Galleri ROM in Oslo, Norway through Feb. 17.

The Legend of Cool “Disco” Dan [Trailer]

Back in the ’80s, the streets of Washington, D.C. were inundated with the graffiti tag “Cool ‘Disco’ Dan,” but few people knew much about the anonymous tagger–who became dubbed the Zorro of D.C. for his disappearing acts soon after he made his markings.

This new documentary,  The Legend of Cool “Disco” Dan, showing at the AFI Silver Theater in Maryland on Feb. 23, examines how Cool “Disco” Dan shaped local DC culture. It also covers the role that politics, crime and music played in the city’s development.
